About

A Berlin Show brings together four art collectives: Studio Baustelle and COPYRIGHTberlin (Berlin), and Acceptable Risk LA and CACtTUS (Los Angeles).

In referencing the Automatic Brake System (ABS), the title echoes the tumultuous events brought on by the initial wave of COVID-19 in 2020. The ABS system kicks in at the moment when the wheels could lock, helping the driver to maintain control of the vehicle and hopefully allowing for the driver and those around them to stay safe.

Unexpected events can cause moments of pause, assessment, and reaction. Our sudden collective delay set into motion new bodies of work, new areas of focus, and in this case a collaboration years in the making. ABS takes into consideration the way viewers move through the gallery and invites them to pump the brakes and take in their surroundings. We hope you’ll accept our invitation to pause, reflect, and explore this collaborative exhibition composed of works from near and far.

Torrance Art Museum (TAM) continues its support and engagement with emerging artists, and artist-run spaces around the world, as we explore the art of our time and facilitate those that produce it.

Yon Natalie Mik, solo performance with participatory component, 15 Minutes

In Squatting Concert (Study 6), a new work as part of her ongoing project Studies on Squats (2019-2022), Yon Natalie Mik will mobilize a collective act of squatting as a healing exercise. The participatory performance invites everyone to take part in building a choreography of protest and mourning for the censored and marginalized bodies among us. While our squatting bodies conceptually and kinetically embody the history and resilience of these vulnerable bodies, it is their bodies that continue to inspire us to imagine other possibilities of (co-)existence.

Bio: Yon Natalie Mik is a Berlin/Los Angeles-based artist, performer and dance scholar working across choreography, image and text. Mik studied classical ballet, Korean classical dance, Indonesian folk dance and Asian Studies. She holds a BA from University of Bonn and an MA from Seoul National University. Since 2021 she works as a research fellow and Ph.D. candidate in dance studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. Yon Natalie Mik's work has been presented internationally in Los Angeles, Berlin, Milan, Seoul and Taipei including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Performance Art Festival Berlin, Pirelli HangarBicocca, Hamburger Bahnhof Museum, Torrance Art Museum, Museum of Latin American Art Long Beach, IfA Gallery Berlin, and Dock 11 Berlin.

Acceptable Risk

Acceptable Risk LA is a Los Angeles-based artist collective established by former members of the FORUM mentorship program at the Torrance Art Museum. This cohort of artists, curators, and writers is focused on staging exhibitions and activities that challenge current ideas about art practices, collective models for art world engagement, and the contemporary art world at large. ARLA’s work thus far has been nomadic, spread throughout LA and mirroring the sprawl of the city, but the group plans to eventually establish a centralized project space while continuing to produce pop-up events.

Studio Baustelle

Studio Baustelle is a non-commercial project space and gallery since 2011. It is run by a collective of four Berlin-based visual artists: Annsofie Jonsson, Felicia Scheuerecker, Janin Walter, and Marija Brasnic. In the past years, we have hosted a range of events, from local to international in scope. Locally we are organizing group shows and solo shows and we are regularly taking part in the festival 48 Stunden Neukölln, as well as the Offene Ateliers Neukölln. From 2022 Studio Baustelle is joining the Gallery Weekend Berlin with our fundraiser “Art for peace in Ukraine“. Our most popular event is the silent auction “100 under 100“ which is promoting emerging Berlin-based visual artists every year in December. We are expanding our horizons by collaborating with international artists and art spaces. We have collaborated with the art collective ARLA for the B-LA connect festival in LA and Berlin, with the cultural center Bürgerschule for the group show “Urban spirits“ in Hannover and with the art space El Puente in Vilaflor, Tenerife for the group show “On water“ Apart from exhibitions, we are also organizing art markets, where visitors can buy authentic pieces from local artists, and art workshops, where visitors can learn about intuitive colorfield painting and printmaking techniques.
