About

Zum Idealen Himmel is the name of a small, dank pub[1]. It’s a dive, full of assorted crooks and filled with dense smoke, and it is where the main character (of Elias Canetti’s novel Auto-Da-Fé published in 1935) Professor Kien’s demise begins. The name of the place is overstated and optimistic, pleonastic, sentimental. None of it fits, the name is perfect.

nationalmuseum hosted by ALSO as part of B-LA Connect 2022 presents works by George Barber, Lesya Godfrey, Susanne Kohler, Raaf van der Sman and John Hodany.

ALSO

ALSO is an artist run gallery space dedicated to the exposure of contemporary art.

nationalmuseum

nationalmuseum was founded in 2008. It shows analytical and experimental work with a strong visual presence. It does not set limits in terms of media, and wants to give artists and curators the possibility to examine points of friction. nationalmuseum aims for confrontation, and this confrontation is mostly established in precisely formulated solo shows or in small group exhibitions.

The works are provided with a theoretical framework, to illuminate their strengths and to enhance the visibility of the artwork. We organize talks, write texts and use other forms of mediation. nationalmuseum redefines itself continuously and particularly the close collaboration that comes with our emphasis on solo shows plays a significant role.

It is nationalmuseum’s goal to make political and aesthetic diversity visible, to strengthen the position of artists, and to strengthen the position of Berlin as one of the critical centers of the art world internationally. To this end it establishes exchanges, cooperates with international curator collectives and takes part in events like 5x5 and B-LA Connect. nationalmuseum also presents its program in lectures, for instance at Sheffield University, and in panel discussions.
