Triadic Art Dialogue between LA, Mexico City, and Berlin
SomoS is delighted to unveil the Xchanging Perspectives group exhibition, a cornerstone of the 2024 B-LA-M festival. This exhibition fosters a vibrant intercultural dialogue among artists from Artspace El Quinto Piso in Mexico, Artbug Gallery in Los Angeles, and SomoS itself, reflecting the festival’s ethos of cross-cultural artistic exchange.
The Xchanging Perspectives exhibition is a dynamic showcase of diverse artistic practices as part of the B-LA-M festival, which brings together art spaces from sister cities across Berlin, Los Angeles, and Mexico City. The festival is hosted by 18 Berlin art spaces, each contributing to a rich anthology of global art narratives.
Representing Artbug Gallery, artists Chicome Itzcuintle Amatlapalli, David Serrano, and Carlos Rittner present a compelling array of paintings, reliefs, embroidery, and ceremonial capes. Their work delves into themes such as queer Mesoamerican indigeneity, spirituality, metaphysics, perception, and the critical discourse of decolonization, offering a poignant exploration of intersecting cultural narratives.
Mexico City’s El Quinto Piso collective contributes an eclectic mix of small-scale paintings and video pieces. Their collective oeuvre addresses pressing socio-cultural issues such as consumerism, violence, sustainability, and the ongoing impacts of colonial legacies, rendered in a vivid, expressive style that challenges conventional perceptions. Representing the collective are Enrique Argote, Juan Bautista, Paula Bernard, Bruno Berthier, Rodrigo Echeverria, Iker Grandio, Alex Lazar, Vitoria Nuñez, Patricia O’hae, Felipe OR, Jorge Sarquis, Toro, Mariau Urrusti, and Juan Vazquez.
Meanwhile, representing Berlin’s own SomoS Arts, artists Caroline Douville, Shoora Majedian, Rieko Tsuji, and Meghan Marie Malar engage with contemporary media such as video, AI, painting, and installation. Their works delve into themes of identity, diaspora, female solidarity, queer family structures, and decolonization, reflecting Berlin’s progressive and international artistic landscape.
Xchanging Perspectives not only showcases a plethora of artistic mediums and narratives but also underscores the shared commitment among these global communities to foster dialogue and understanding through the arts. This exhibition promises a reflective journey through the diverse lenses of artists grappling with complex global and local realities.
